Established under the aegis of the Himalayan Institute of Natural Sciences—headquartered in Namchi, South Sikkim—the platform acts as an independent journal, a cultural archive, and an uncompromising advocate for the entire Himalayan ecosystem. Spanning the breathtaking landscapes of Northern India, Nepal, and Bhutan, Himalayan Expression bridges the gap between grassroots realities and academic insight.

The publication was envisioned and founded by Mr. Hemant Dawarhi, a distinguished social activist, author, researcher, and environmentalist. Deeply rooted in the Himalayan terrain, Mr. Dawarhi recognized that the mountains were facing unprecedented ecological stressors. The inception of both the Institute and the journal was born from a profound sense of responsibility toward emerging climate change challenges, rapid environmental degradation, and the urgent necessity to formulate localized conservation and climate-resilience frameworks.

The Founder's Journey: Grassroots Activism and Livelihood Projects

Mr. Hemant Dawarhi has dedicated a lifetime to grassroots activism, working extensively across the hills of Sikkim in biodiversity conservation, natural resource management, and sustainable livelihood projects.

Understanding that environmental conservation cannot succeed without economic empowerment, Mr. Dawarhi pioneered community-centric models of rural development. His pioneering work includes serving as a voluntary consultant and founding architect for several acclaimed community-based tourism and heritage initiatives in Sikkim, most notably:

• Rice Valley Heritage Tourism (Lingmoo, Sikkim): A community-driven initiative celebrating local agricultural heritage, indigenous traditions, and authentic village life.

• Lingee Payong Community Homestay: A model of sustainable hospitality that puts local families at the forefront of tourism management, ensuring that financial benefits directly uplift the rural economy while safeguarding natural surroundings.

These foundational field experiences ultimately catalyzed the creation of the Himalayan Institute of Natural Sciences—a centralized hub dedicated to holistic research, scientific study, and the active preservation of mountain heritage.
